After the fall of the western half of the
Roman Empire in 476 AD, the Church of Rome would grow into a
politically independent international organization. In the west,
Germanic invaders settled and established kingdoms. The Western
Church would hold its position against these invaders by converting
them to Catholic Christianity. Through the method of conversion the
church incorporated powerful kingdoms into its growing institution.
Pivotal alliances with rulers like the early Frankish monarchs
established the Church as a powerful force and solidified its role
as the leader of the known Christian world. The Church would display
its growing authority in the form of an unprecedented military
campaign, the First Crusade. |
